Vlissingen (Flushing) in the province of Zeeland


Vlissingen Flushing harbor photoThe city of Vlissingen (in English: Flushing) is situated in the southwestern Netherlands on the former island of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland (Sealand).

With its strategic location between the Scheldt river and the North Sea, Vlissingen has been an important harbour for centuries. It was granted city rights in 1315.

In the 17th century the city of Vlissingen was a main harbor for ships of the V.O.C., the Dutch East India Company.

The city is also known as the birthplace of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, who was born on March 24, 1607.
